Testing the Hypothesis

1. The opportunity? - Major traffic issue along interstates and highways that result in individuals and families being bounded to a roadway for an extended period of time. Which causes them to miss flights, be late to work meetings, and delays their day to day activities.

2. Who? - The traffic on interstates and highway systems causing people to be late for meetings and keep them from their day to day activities.

What? - The are unable to continue a constant flow of traffic when there is an excess of vehicles on the road or when there is a collision.

Why? - Human psychology and the outdated road systems in place. When a collision occurs on the highway system or in some cases even a flat tire, people begin the act called "Rubbernecking" which is when they slow the speed of their vehicle to observe what the chaos is. In the process of them decreasing their speed, now the next 10-12 cars behind them must decrease their speed to compensated the first person. This causes a chain effect which ends up in congestion and bumper to bumper traffic.

3. There are other who share this need. Including other major road ways around the world that extend through cities, around towns, and through mountains. All road systems experience some degree of traffic. But no where near as evasive as major highway systems like ones that extend through cities such as L.A and New York City where sitting in your car can surpass 3 hours in heavy traffic.

This holds in place for everyone who is attempting to get to a certain location in a given amount of time. Some people do not mind sitting in traffic. They will call their loved ones and friends in the time being or keep themselves occupied by listening to music or a podcast.

Some blame the reason for the congestion and traffic on other reasons, such as a lack of law enforcement and emergency services catering to the needs of a car crash in a timely matter. Also, when roadways undergo construction in the middle of the day time, they tend to close off certain lanes to the public, which in return could also have a negative effect on the constant flow cars. So based on who you are speaking with, the why is somewhat subjective.

After talking to different people about my potential opportunity, I came to learn that some people do not mind traffic. They take it as an opportunity for themselves to multitask in the car while they wait for the road way to clear up. This includes writing emails on their phone, catching up with friends and family by phone call, and also getting down a late breakfast or lunch. In addition, some people have different theories to what the root cause is behind having traffic. Extending from some claiming emergency services lack of response time to accidents, construction work on the highways themselves, and just natural human psychology to take interest in the chaos that is occurring. I believe all of these inputs are helping me shape my opportunity into something that could fix the problem for everyones situation.

  1. Traffic & transportation is a really interesting opportunity to write about. I'm glad you chose it & I look forward to reading about how you idea evolves. I had a similar experience where some of the people I interviewed were not very concerned with the problem I thought was so obviously an issue! It just shows how not everyone can be your customer & you have to work to narrow down who is willing to pay for your product.

  2. Traffic is only as stressful as the urgency to get where you are going. If you are late for an appointment or meeting then you will be more stressed in the situation. If you are traveling for pleasure, you don't mind the time it can take to get places. Rubbernecking is a big issue, but i also feel that one issue could be the use of lanes by drivers. Some drivers will go slow in lanes that are designed for passing and that can cause other drivers to be reckless in their driving habits.
